Ashe County got off to a good start on Wednesday with a second place finish in the first golf match of the 2012 season. The Lady Huskies opened the season with a home match at Mountain Aire Golf Course.
Elkin took first place with a team score of 133. Ashe was next in line, shooting 146. Alleghany took third (162) followed by Wilkes Central in fourth (170) and Forbush in fifth (174).
Individually, Taylor Price had the best round for the Lady Huskies, shooting a 47. Katie Girtman shot a 49, followed by Olivia Barr with a 50 and Madison Little with a 55. All four qualified for regionals with their scores.
Elkin golfers Annika Winebarger and Mary Francis Hall had the best rounds of the day with Winebarger shooting a 40 and Hall just one shot back. Kaley Cornelison (52) and Jillian Lewis (59) rounded out the Elkin scores.
Katie Tally had the best round for the Alleghany team, shooting a 47. Meredith Walker (56), Kristen Carico (59) and Mikaela Whittaker (60) helped the team take third place overall.
Wilkes Central was led by Catherine Howell with a score of 51. Ashlynn Stackhouse shot a 59, one shot ahead of teammate Allison Brame.
The fifth and final team was Forbush. Kelsey Kem and Alexis Huffman each shot a 57, followed by Kimberly Granger (60) and Ariel Montoya (61).
Golfers will be back on the links Sept. 19 at High Meadows Golf Course in Roaring Gap.
