A great coach can be defined as someone who loves what they do and loves their players.
Marc Payne, better known as Coach Payne, is not only a coach, but also a great man. He is respected by players both past and present as well as the community.
In the four years that I attended Ashe County High School, Coach Payne made a huge impact on my life. Coach Payne cares about each player as a whole and that includes what goes on off the court too. He handles adversity in ways a lot of coaches could not, teaches lessons that mean more than the game of basketball, and cares about us more as individuals than as players. We could always count on him to be there whenever we needed someone to talk to.
The amount of time, dedication, and effort he puts into the basketball program is something most people would find hard to do. While the fans and community believe they have an understanding about his love for basketball, only Coach Payne’s family, including his players will ever really know.
Coach Payne is one of the most inspirational role models I have ever known. He taught lessons that I will never forget such as to always strive to do your best, never give up when the going gets tough, push for what you believe in, and rely on your teammates. He is more than just a coach; he is a teacher, role model, and overall, a great man. Without Coach Payne’s influence, a lot of players might not have learned valuable life lessons. I know that I would not be the well-rounded student, athlete, and confident leader that I am today without Coach Payne’s lessons.
Not seeing Coach Payne on the sidelines or hearing his recognizable voice during games will be different. However, I know that Coach Grubb will do an excellent job and will continue the great tradition of Ashe County Basketball. I believe this because Coach Grubb learned from the best and he too helped shape the lives of many basketball players. I think that I speak for all former players when I say that it has been a privilege to be coached by Marc Payne.
Thank you Coach Payne for everything that you did not only for me but also for our community.
