Ashe County sent 14 cross country runners to the 2A Midwest Regional held in Kernersville last weekend.
Both the men’s and women’s team finished in seventh place overall while Mac Church qualified for the state championship meet this weekend on the same course.
Church finished in ninth place overall in the women’s event with a finishing time of 20 minutes, 47 seconds. Victoria Reed finished 25th in a time of 22:19, followed by a trio of teammates in 45th, 46th, and 47th places. Chelsea Eller finished in 24:02, Chrissy Simmons in 24:06 and Tyler Eller in 24:09. Alexes Armstrong completed the course in 24:56 and Caroline Trent was the final Ashe runner, crossing the line in 26:03.
Cuthbertson took the regional title with 46 points. Central Davidson (92) was second, West Davidson (98)was third, Piedmont (105) was fourth and West Stokes (149) finished fifth. Wilkes Central and Ashe finished sixth and seventh with team scores of 152 and 172. Forbush placed eighth with a score of 173.
On the men’s side, Gareth Berry was the highest finishing Ashe runner. The freshman completed the course in 18:42, fast enough for 25th position. Richard Burke finished 33rd in a time of 19:03 and Jonathan Nichols crossed the line in 40th position with a team of 19:28. Other Ashe runners included Andrew Tedder (49th, 19:44), Nathan Jolly (75th, 21:25), Landon Bush (77th, 21:28) and Zach Gouge (83rd, 22:15).
Cuthbertson took the regional title in the men’s race as well with 39 points. Central Davidson was second with West Stokes, Piedmont and Wilkes Central rounding out the top five. Forbush, Ashe County, West Davidson, Salisbury and West Stanly completed the top 10 finishing teams.
