Ashe County baseball picked up its fifth win of the season, beating North Wilkes at home, 7-3.
Both teams started off the game by pitching out of first inning jams. North Wilkes loaded the bases in the top of the first, but Cameron Guyton got a big strikeout against Travis Parsons to end the threat. In the bottom half of the first, Ashe was able to get a pair of runners on base but could not get any runs across the plate.
The Huskies did get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Matthew Hamilton stole home as part of a double steal when Brandon Carpenter took off for second base.
Ashe broke through for three more runs in the very next inning. Alex Laws got on base after the Viking catcher dropped the third strike and let the ball get away. Joe Richardson followed that up with a single to put two runners on base. Senior Carson Knight smashed a two-run double to left field that scored both Richardson and Laws to put Ashe ahead, 3-0. Next up, Guyton doubled to center to put runners on second and third with just one out. Matthew Hamilton then dropped a bunt down that scored courtesy runner Zackary May from third base to take a 4-0 lead after three innings of play.
Knight notched his third RBI of the night in the fourth inning with a single to left that scored Richardson after he singled, stole second, and advanced to third on an error.
North Wilkes started to chip away at the Ashe lead in the fifth inning. Josh Bare singled to center and Austin Owens followed that up with a single to left. Both runners moved up a base on an error. Bare scored the first run on a dropped third strike that got away from Knight behind the plate. Owens moved to third and eventually scored on a double steal. The third Viking run scored on an Ashe fielding miscue to make the score 5-3 going to the bottom of the fifth.
The Huskies got two of the runs back when Hamilton singled and later scored on an error and then Jackson Sloan ripped an RBI single to left that brought in Carpenter.
After the fifth, it was smooth sailing for Guyton on the mound. The senior got a pair of groundouts and a popup in the sixth inning, then finished off the complete game in the seventh with a strikeout and two more groundouts.
Guyton earned his fourth win of the season while giving up just one earned run with 10 strikeouts.
At the plate, Knight led the way with three hits and three RBIs. Hamilton also added three hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Richardson chipped in a pair of hits while Laws, Guyton, Evan Walker and Sloan each had one hit.
Ashe is now 5-10 overall and 5-10 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
The Huskies will wrap up the regular season at home on Monday against West Wilkes. This will also be Senior Night for Cameron Guyton, Brandon Carpenter, Jonathan Barlow and Carson Knight.
