An accident at the intersection of N.C. 16 and N.C. 88 in Jefferson resulted in one fatality and three injuries Monday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

According to Trooper J.D. Brown, Donald Thompson, 65, of Jefferson, driving a blue Nissan Frontier collided into a black Jeep 4x4 driven by Roxanne Severt, 33, of Jefferson. Severt’s two small children were with her in the vehicle.

Thompson, Severt and her children were rushed to Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Thompson was pronounced dead on arrival.

Severt was listed in stable condition, and her two children were treated for cuts and bruises, Brown said.

Brown did not give an official report on the details of the accident.

An eyewitness said Thompson went through the intersection at N.C. 16 and N.C. 88 and struck the Jeep, causing the Jeep to roll before coming to a stop at a nearby utility pole.
