Ashe County’s junior varsity baseball team ended the year on a high note with a 6-1 victory over West Wilkes on Monday.
Joseph Lowder was fantastic on the mound as he allowed just one unearned run on three hits with nine strikeouts to record his sixth win of the season and third win in a row. Before this start, Lowder fanned 15 North Wilkes batters and allowed just two hits.
This win over the Blackhawks gave Ashe a 12-4 overall and conference record.
Possibly the biggest highlight of the 2013 season was when Lowder tossed a complete game, no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Elkin on April 18.
Offensively, several Ashe players had solid seasons at the plate. Lowder led the team in hits this year with 17. Hunter Barnes had 15 hits, Thomas Sexton added 12, Bradley Richie had 11 and Carter Calhoun had 10. Lowder also led the team in RBI’s with 15. Barnes finished with 13 runs knocked in, Richie had 11 RBIs and Ben Brown chipped in with nine runs knocked in.
Calhoun got most of the scoring started by reaching base at the top of the lineup. Calhoun led all Ashe players with 17 runs scored and seven stolen bases.
