Appalachian State quarterback Jamal Londry-Jackson was picked by the Southern Conference coaches as the preseason SoCon Player of the Year.
Preseason awards and all-conference teams were announced last Wednesday at the SoCon Media Day.
Londry-Jackson was a finalist for last year’s Walter Payton Award, which goes to the country’s best Football Championship Subdivision player.
According to Appalachian Sports Information, Londry-Jackson was seventh in the nation in passing yards and total offense in 2012 and was just 13 yards shy of breaking the all-time passing record at ASU held by former star QB Armanti Edwards.
Londry-Jackson was one of eight Mountaineer players to receive preseason award recognition. Offensive lineman Kendall Lamm, wide receivers Andrew Peacock, Sean Price, and Tony Washington, and defensive lineman Ronald Blair were all preseason first team all-conference pics. Kicker Drew Stewart and defensive back Joel Ross were on the second team.
In the SoCon preseason poll, Georgia Southern was picked to finish in first place, followed by ASU and Chattanooga. Since Georgia Southern and App State are ineligible to win the SoCon title due to the decision to join the Sun Belt Conference, only seven teams can compete for the SoCon Championship
Samford finished fourth in the coaches poll, followed by Wofford, The Citadel, Furman, Elon and Western Carolina.
