The National Committee for the New River and the New River State Park has rescheduled the celebration that would have marked the 38th anniversary of the designation of the New River as a National Scenic River.
The original event was scheduled for Sept. 11, 2013.
However, National Committee for the New River and the New River State Park will instead be hosting its Annual New River Cleanup event, which spans Watauga, Ashe, and Alleghany counties on Saturday, Sept. 14 2013. The effort is part of the annual North Carolina Big Sweep and the International Coastal Cleanup.
Each year, on the second Saturday of September, volunteers take to the New River and her tributaries to retrieve trash, tires, and an unfortunate variety of garbage from the river. By water and by foot, volunteers work in teams with local river outfitters to scour the river bottom and its banks.
Volunteers should call Courtney Wait at NCNR at 336-846-6267 or email Courtney@ncnr.org to sign up for this year’s clean up and for more information. Community groups are especially encouraged to participate.
Volunteers should bring their own boats if available, and clothing they don’t mind getting very dirty. Closed-toed shoes are required.
Boats, gloves and disposal bags will be provided by NCNR and New River Clean Up sponsors.
Come out and join us in keeping the New River a place where we all want to live, work, and play!
