Fundraiser pits three restaurants in grass-fed contest

A fundraiser for Ashe County’s Explorer Post will allow those in attendance to graze on some of the area’s best burgers.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, Black Jack’s, Boondocks and Old Hotel Tavern in West Jefferson, will have chefs competing at the Farmer’s Market to help promote awareness of grass-fed meat.

Burgers will be made as sliders, so everybody has a sample of each restaurant’s burger.

“(Cooking with grass-fed) is trickier,” Jo Wohlfeld, the cook off’s organizer said. “Because it’s not as fat, so you can get a really dry, boring, tasting burger if you just picked up grass-fed meat from a farmer’s market and try to do it yourself.”

That’s how Wohlfeld got the idea to have chefs compete so people could try the meat affordably and see how the grass-fed burgers are supposed to taste.

Also Wohlfeld would like to see more farms promote grass-fed beef.

“Grass-fed beef is a boutique price,” she said. “If grass-fed beef can become mainstream and there are more farms promoting it, then it can get the price down.”

Wohlfeld said the contest is people’s choice, so everybody will get to vote on who they thought had the best burger.

Grass-fed cattle are different from others because they spend their entire life grazing on grass. Other cattle generally spend the last third of their lives eating other foods such as corn to gain weight.

“It’s not necessary,” Wohlfeld said. “If (farmers) slow down the process a little bit, they can just raise them and finish them on grass.”

Tickets are $5 and the event will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. All money raised, once the food and other costs are covered will be going to the Explorer Post in Ashe County.

The tickets can be purchased at the three restaurants.

Explorers are a scout division for 14 to 20 year olds that help boys and girls get internships.

“We are doing an alternative ag and sustainable living posts and we’re bringing people in from all over for classes and workshops,” Wohlfeld said.
