An arts and crafts festival, sponsored by the Ashe County Arts Council, will bring artisans of all types into the county.

“We have a lovely assortment of arts and crafts this year,” said Jane Lonon, director of the Ashe County Arts Council. “There are all mediums and styles of art.”

Starting at 9 a.m. and running through 3 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 28, Art on the Mountain will have everything from quilting and pottery to literary arts and basket weaving.

Lonon said the event is like a miniature Christmas in July festival.

“We have about three dozen different vendors from the High Country for the event,” she said.

Lonon said that the artisans will not only sell their work, but many will be holding demonstrations of their crafts as well.

The event will be hosted outside of the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson.

Most of the artists are from Ashe County and surrounding areas, but as the area is gaining more recognition as an art scene, creators and art lovers alike have been willing to drive to the area.

“It’s always been a small show and locally focused, but as Ashe County and West Jefferson are becoming known as art centers, we continue to attract high quality artists of many calibers here,” Lonon said.

Art on the Mountain is free and will happen rain or shine. If there is rain, the event will relocate to the Early Learning Center in West Jefferson.
