Two old rivals square off at Ashe County High School this Friday as Wilkes Central heads up the mountain to battle the Huskies.
The Eagles are coming off of its first victory of the season, a 26-25 nail-biter over West Wilkes.
Ashe is hoping to keep the momentum going after a big come-from-behind win at Alleghany last week.
Central is led by leading rusher Victor Williams, who is coming off of the best game of his career with 204 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
The Eagles are a very ground-oriented team and have struggled to pass the ball for much of the season. Jonathan Cook will be calling the signals under center and will be more of a running threat than passing threat.
Williams is no stranger to Ashe County. The junior burst onto the scene last year with 116 rushing yards against the Huskies, a game that marked the first time he had ever reached the 100-yard plateau. Now, as the lead back, he has scampered his way to over 600 yards through five games.
Ashe will answer with Johnathan Cox on the ground and Connor Bowers through the air. Cox scored twice last week and Bowers was an accurate passer, missing on just five of his 15 attempts.
If the game comes down to who has the better defense, the Huskies appear to be in the driver’s seat, at least on paper.
Ashe has allowed just 105 points this season, lowest in the conference. On the flip side, Central has allowed 152 points, the most points allowed by any of the eight Mountain Valley Athletic Conference teams.
Both teams come into this contest very battle-tested. Ashe has faced a pair of 4A schools, Watauga and R.J. Reynolds, 3A powerhouse Hibriten and a road game at North Surry. Wilkes Central also played Hibriten and Watauga to go along with a home game against Surry Central and a road game at North Iredell.
Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. at ACHS.
Score prediction: Ashe 20, Wilkes Central 14
