Ashe County remained undefeated in conference play, and added another non-conference win to an already-impressive season.
Ashe 13, West Wilkes 12
The Blackhawks struck first with an interception returned for a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.
West Wilkes was driving again when Ashe recovered a fumble on a bad snap late in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, West added on to its lead with a TD pass to go ahead, 12-0.
Ashe had a pair of great opportunities to score, but the offense could not get the job done. Ashe took over at the Blackhawks’ 10-yard line late in the second, but the West Wilkes defense stiffened up and kept the Huskies from scoring.
Matthew Greer made a touchdown saving tackle in the third quarter that eventually led to a turnover of downs.
The Huskies started moving the ball with runs from Hunter Argetsinger. However, the drive came to an abrupt end when Skye Sullivan fumbled at the Blackhawks two-yard line.
Ashe finally got on the board in the fourth quarter. Colin Ellis found Garett Miller for a 40-yard completion before Sullivan scored on a 20-yard TD run. Kendall Richardson’s extra point was good, making the score 12-7.
The Huskies badly needed a stop late in the fourth to get the ball back, and they got it when Luis Ramos sacked the quarterback to force a punt.
On Ashe’s final drive, Ellis came up with a huge fourth-down conversion to keep the game going. With just 29 seconds left in the game, Sullivan stiff-armed his way into the corner of the endzone for the go-ahead score.
Joseph Lowder sealed the victory by intercepting a pass on fourth down.
Ashe 32, Cherryville 6
After East Wilkes shut down its junior varsity program for the season, Ashe scheduled a non-conference game with Cherryville High School.
Ashe found pay dirt quickly on its first drive. A long pass from Ellis to Lowder set up a three-yard TD run by Sullivan. Ashe was up 6-0 with 5:16 left in the first.
The Huskies forced a pair of late turnovers in the quarter. Ben Brown knocked the ball away from the runner and Sam Hudler recovered it. The offense was not able to capitalize.
Cherryville fumbled the snap on a punt and was down at its own 14-yard line.
Ashe was able to make them pay for that miscue with an eight-yard TD pass from Ellis to Tristan Jones. The extra point was good and the Huskies were ahead, 13-0.
The defense did some scoring of its own on the next drive. Richardson stripped the quarterback of the ball and returned it 54 yards for the score. Ashe took a 19-0 lead at the half.
Ashe added a score in the third quarter. A long pass from Ellis to Lowder once again set up a short TD run. Jones scored from one yard out. Ashe was ahead 26-0 and looked to put it on cruise control in the fourth quarter.
Colton Miller scored the final Husky TD on a five-yard run with 5:42 left in the game.
Cherryville added a late touchdown to avoid the shutout.
Ashe will travel to Starmount this Thursday.
