Shelby made an early first-half goal stand the rest of the way to end Ashe’s season with a 1-0 victory in the third round of the 2A State Playoffs.
Miguel Ramos had two shots on goal in the 10th and 12th minute, but saw both shots get stopped.
The Lions countered in the 13th minute and got its lone goal from Richard Wright off of a corner kick.
The teams exchanged corner kicks halfway through the first 40 minutes. Shelby got kicks in the 14th and 21st minutes while Ashe got one in the 16th minute and 23rd minute. None of the corners resulted in any shot attempts.
Ashe came ever so close to scoring in the 24th minute. Cesar Ruiz nearly had a rebound goal after the Shelby goalkeeper was caught out of the net. However, Ruiz’s shot was turned away by a defending Lion fullback who was able to make a play on the ball before it crossed the line.
In the second half, Ashe opened strong with a shot just wide by Ramos in the 48th minute and then an Ashe corner kick in the 49th minute, but still no goals.
The Huskies had corner kick chances in the 63rd, 65th and 67th minutes, but once again, the Lion’s back line was too much for the Ashe strikers.
A last gasp effort in the closing minutes on a free kick was turned away, giving the Lions a spot in the 2A West Quarterfinals.
Ashe ended the season with a 17-7-1 record overall and a 12-1-1 record in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. This was also the second year in a row that the Huskies earned the conference championship.
