Watauga led after the first quarter, but it was all Ashe County after that as the Lady Huskies earned its third victory of the season, 43-28.
“We are excited to beat Watauga and get our first win on our home court. It was a very good team win,” said Head Coach Laura Foster.
The Lady Pioneers had a 12-8 lead after the first quarter.
Ashe bounced back in a big way to outscore Watauga 15-5 in the second quarter and take a halftime lead.
“Our second quarter was big. It gave us momentum going into the locker room at the half,” Foster said.
In the second half, Ashe’s defense continued to stifle Watauga, holding them to just 11 points in the final two quarters. The Lady Huskies also kept the offensive attack going to pull away for the double-digit win.
“I thought we were more patient on the offensive end and made better decisions in the second half,” Coach Foster said.
Paige Spell recorded her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Point guard Morgan Hudler ended up with 13 points, three assists and three rebounds. Hallie Brown added seven points and pulled down four boards. Ashton Lee added three points and a game-high three steals and Abby Lopp had two points and five rebounds.
Ryan Loflin led Watauga with six points. Madi Brown had five, Kaelin McNeill scored four and Tori Derrick had four.
This week, the Lady Huskies will have three tough opponents. Ashe will play Mount Airy on Monday at home, travel to Avery on Tuesday and wrap up the week at home against Alleghany on Friday.
