Several late trips to the free throw line made the difference for the Lady Huskies in its win last Friday against East Wilkes.
The Lady Cardinals rallied back to take a brief lead with under two minutes left in the game, but successful free throws from Morgan Hudler, Tyler Eller and Paige Spell down the stretch helped Ashe hang on for the 60-55 win.
“I was very proud of my team. East Wilkes came out on a mission in the second half and we withstood their run and was able to get the win,” said Ashe County Head Coach Laura Foster.
This was Ashe’s fourth win in the last five contests and pushed the team’s overall record back to an even 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
East Wilkes is also 7-7 overall and saw its conference mark fall to 3-2.
The Lady Huskies had a 10-point halftime lead and extended that lead to as much as 16 in the second half, but the Lady Cardinals stormed all the way back to take a 53-52 lead.
However, four free throws from Hudler, three from Eller and one from Spell in the last 1:30 of the game clinched the victory.
“This was a huge conference road win. East Wilkes has been playing really well, so we knew we would have our hands full and we did,” Coach Foster said. “There were a lot of fans cheering for both teams, the atmosphere was awesome. This was an exciting game.”
Spell finished with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Hudler had 13 points and eight assists and Eller had her best game of the season with nine points and five boards.
Ashton Lee added six points and seven rebounds, Savannah Brooks had six points and seven boards, Brown had five points, Abby Lopp had four points and Sydney Kate Grubb had one point.
Ashe will host rival Wilkes Central this Friday.
