East Wilkes and Ashe County battled through four close quarters, but the Cardinals were able to get the best of the home team lady Huskies, 63-58.
“This was a disappointing loss,” said Ashe Head Coach Laura Foster. “Our second half intensity level didn’t match East Wilkes.”
Foster also shouldered some of the blame, saying she could have done some things differently.
Offensively, it was a very balanced scoring night. Morgan Hudler led the team with 12 points, including eight points from the free throw line. The junior point guard also dished out a team-high seven assists.
Hallie Brown had 11 points and four rebounds, Sydney Kate Grubb had her season-best total of nine points, Paige Spell had nine points and seven rebounds and Ashton Lee returned from injury to score nine points.
Sophomore Savannah Brooks chipped in four points and 11 rebounds and junior Abby Lopp had four points and six boards.
The Lady Huskies hold a 10-10 overall record and are 5-5 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. East Wilkes is 10-9 overall and 6-4 in the MVAC.
Ashe will wrap up the regular season next week, which includes a rematch with rival Wilkes Central on Tuesday in Wilkesboro. Ashe will host Starmount on Monday and West Wilkes on Thursday.
