Former Ashe County Lady Husky and three-sport star Mallary Clay added a prestigious award to her continually growing list of athletic and academic achievements.
Clay was named the 2014 Dean Grove Award winner at Catawba College. The award is given to an athlete that is majoring in a science or mathematics field and demonstrates excellence and success in both athletics and academics.
The Lansing native started 26 of Catawba’s 27 games this past season, and as the team’s co-captain, averaged 8.5 points and 3.8 rebounds a game while finishing second on the team in three-point shooting, hitting 33-percent of her perimeter shots.
Clay was also the team’s top free throw shooter as she hit 58 of 65 attempts, good enough for 89 percent shooting from the charity stripe.
As a sophomore, Clay played in all 27 games and saw her minutes continue to increase, finishing the year averaging 15 minutes per game off the bench.
Clay will earn her degree in Biology after three years of hard work and determination.
During her career at ACHS, she was part of arguably the best stretch of games in Lady Husky program history. Clay’s team won three straight conference championships and held an overall record of 72-9. Those three years also continued a streak of 20-win seasons to five in a row.
