Saturday morning marks the start of the annual High Country Triple Crown, a series of three running events in Watauga County over the next five months.

The first leg of the triple crown has been given the name “The Cub.” The race starts and finishes at Valle Crucis School. All runners start at 8 a.m. This race is sponsored by Mast General Store.

The seven-mile run sends competitors through the picturesque mountain community of Valle Crucis. The race will send runners by the Mast General Store, Baird Barn and across the Watauga River.

The Cub will challenge runners with steep climbs, hills and big downhill run across a low water bridge.

There are still spots available to run in the event. Runners can register online at until June 11. The registration fee for the run is $40. Runners can also elect to go ahead and register for all three of the races in the High Country Triple Crown. Runners can register on the day of the event.

Special prizes will be given away, as well as awards for the top three male and female finishers in each age category.

Runners can pick up race packets on Friday, June 13 from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., or can arrive early on Saturday morning and pick them up from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m.

The next event in the triple crown will be the High Country Half Marathon on August 30 before the final event, dubbed “The Knob” where runners start at the Watauga County Public Library and make the brutal climb up the road to Howard’s Knob Park.
