Firefighters representing five Ashe County and one Grayson County volunteer fire departments, spent Monday-Wednesday engaged in testing before a representative from the N.C. Department of Insurance (NCDOI).
The tests/exercises occurred at Shatley Springs.
Members from the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, Lansing Volunteer Fire Department, Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department, New River Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Piney Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Rugby (Va.) Volunteer Fire and Rescue all took part in the testing.
According to Denver Caudill, training officer for New River Volunteer Fire and Rescue, the purpose of the tests was to lower ISO ratings.
“They’re (NCDOI) seeing how long it takes to fill the tankers; calculate distance from their departments to the fire scene; how much water they hold,” Caudill said. “They drive so far to dump then see how far they unload.”
