WEST JEFFERSON-Firefighters quickly put out a small fire in a West Jefferson apartment complex Friday night.
The West Jefferson, Jefferson and Warrensville Fire Departments were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. to a reported smoking apartment complex located behind the Hillbilly Grill, at 601 South Jefferson Avenue, according to Ashe County Communications.
West Jefferson Police Department Sgt. Josh Hodges said firefighters quickly had the small blaze in hand.
“By the time I got here everyone in the units was outside,” Hodges said. “So nobody was injured. Not sure on the exact location the fire started yet – there weren’t any flames when I arrived just a whole lot of smoke – so it’s still under investigation.”
‘Oh my God!’
Val Riegreer said she pulled into the apartment complex’s parking lot shortly after 6 p.m. to chat with some of her friends standing behind the Hillbilly Grill.
“I said I smelled smoke but we didn’t see anything,” Riegreer said.
Forty-five minutes later Riegreer said she was walking across the apartment complex’s parking lot when a man living in a lower level apartment unit stepped outside and yelled for help.
“He came out and smoke blew out (of the apartment),” Riegreer said. “I said, ‘Oh my God his apartment is on fire so I called 911.”
Investigators declined to comment on the fire. The Jefferson Post will update with further details as they become available.
