ASHE COUNTY —Sometimes it comes down to the luck of the draw or, in this case, the flip of a coin.
The Ashe County Board of Elections confirmed on Tuesday that the deadlocked West Jefferson alderman race between Brett Summey and Rusty Barr was settled by – literally – flipping a coin. The pair tied at 77 votes each on election night last week.
Summey was declared the winner following Tuesday morning’s coin flip, according to the Board of Elections. He’ll join this year’s top vote-getter, Jerry McMillan with 82 votes, on the West Jefferson Board of Aldermen.
The Jefferson Post will update with Barr and Summey’s reactions as they become available.
