30 WCC students received Golden LEAF Scholarships

WILKESBORO — Wilkes Community College awarded Golden LEAF Scolarships to 30 students – 23 curriculum and seven continuing education – during the Spring 2015 semester. The Golden LEAF Scholarship program, designed to help North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation.

Golden Leaf recipients who were enrolled in curriculum programs for spring 2015 were: Megan Gerth, Ashe County; Marissa, Goodman, Ashe County; Virginia Hamilton, Ashe County; Amy Lee, Ashe County; Francisco Ledezma, Ashe County; Carmelina Mahaffey, Ashe County; Terry Mahaffey, Ashe County; Angela Miller, Ashe County; Betty Miller, Ashe County; Robert Osborne, Ashe County; Jakolia Parsons, Ashe County; Eva Petty, Ashe County; Pamela Phillips, Ashe County; Barbara Ritchie, Ashe County; Sandra Roten, Ashe County; Donna Sexton, Ashe County; Garry Sexton, Ashe County; Ringo Ravares, Ashe County; Justin Weaver, Ashe County; Mistilina Borders, Wilkes County; Ellen Holland, Wilkes County; Derek Patterson, Wilkes County; and Teodora Velasquez, Wilkes County.

Golden Leaf recipients who were enrolled in continuing education programs for spring 2015 were: Patricia Church, Ashe County; Sara Hughes, Ashe County; Elizabeth Miller, Ashe County; Cynthia Price, Ashe County; Tiffany Sawyer, Ashe County; Britnie Woods, Ashe County; and Desma Shaw, Wilkes County.

Curriculum students may apply for up to $750 per semester, including summer term, and occupational education students are eligible for up to $250 per term. Awards may be applied toward tuition, fees, books and supplies at the community college where enrolled; transportation; childcare expenses related to attending classes; and industry-recognized credential testing upon course completion.

Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and reside in rural counties that are tobacco-dependent and/or economically distressed. Scholarships are awarded during the fall, spring and summer semesters.

The Golden LEAF Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1999 to help transform North Carolina’s economy. The foundation receives one-half of North Carolina’s funds from the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with cigarette manufacturers and places special emphasis on assisting tobacco-dependent, economically distressed and/or rural communities across the state.
