WEST JEFFERSON — Sometimes writing a simple letter can make all the difference.

That turned out to be the case for the Ashe County Senior Center. The organization invited the community to an open house on Friday to show off their latest facility updates

According to Senior Center Director Glenda Luther, the updates were made possible thanks to the $18,000 they received from an annual letter-writing fundraiser conducted by the Ashe Services for Aging Foundation Board.

“The open house is a chance to see where the money went and the improvements we’ve made here at the senior center but it’s also a chance for those who haven’t been to the senior center to come out and see what we’ve got going on,” Luther said.

The list of improvements included a new automatic door system and new furniture and paint for the senior center lobby. A new television was also added that continuously displays senior center updates and pictures.

Luther said the biggest addition to the senior center includes the “My Senior Center Check-In” system.

According to Luther, each visitor is assigned a key tag with a bar code on the back. Once scanned, all the activities scheduled that day at the senior center are listed on the screen for the visitor to select.

“It tracks all our numbers for funding reasons and it shows how well our senior center is doing,” Luther said.

The system also tracks volunteer hours and has a phone-tree system that can contact visitors when certain activities are canceled or if the senior center is closing for bad weather.

According to Janet Manchette, who teaches exercise classes at the senior center, updates like this help give Ashe County seniors the chance to stay active.

“When you don’t have a job to go to anymore, this is tremendous for friends and fellowship as well as all the other benefits that come with it,” Janet Manchette said. “We might not live longer, but we’re trying for a better quality of life.”
