Ashe County High confirms death of student

Sheriff: Investigation is ongoing

WEST JEFFERSON-Ashe County High School confirmed the recent death of one of its students Monday.

That’s according to a letter published on the school’s website by ACHS Principal Jason Krider. Krider identified the student as Allen Barker.

“I am writing with great sadness to inform you that one of our students, Allen Barker, has died,” Krider said. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends.”

Krider said the cause of Barker’s death has yet to be determined, and Ashe County Sheriff James Williams said the investigation into the incident is continuing.

Students were notified of Barker’s death Monday morning, and Krider’s letter has been published on the school’s website. Krider said the ACHS Crisis Response Team can meet with students to work through the tragedy.

The Jefferson Post will update as further details become available.
