WEST JEFFERSON-A series of small mistakes caused a West Jefferson man to crash his car near the entrance of Ingles Supermarket in West Jefferson on March 3.
Firefighters and officers from the West Jefferson Police Department responded to the accident, which occurred shortly before noon, according to a report filed by WJPD Officer Josh Hodges.
Bennie Leonard Sheets, 85, was attempting to park his late model Subaru car in one of the parking spaces in front of the grocery store when he pulled too far forward and struck a pole, according to Hodges’ report.
Sheets shifted gears into what he believed was “park,” but actually shifted the car into reverse. The vehicle then accelerated in reverse, struck another vehicle and smashed into a display of propane cannisters, like those typically used to fuel an outdoor barbecue.
Firefighters could be seen gingerly moving the cannisters from the damaged display.
“Really just a small slip that led to it,” West Jefferson Police Chief Jeff Rose said Friday.
Rose said no one was hurt in the parking lot mixup.
