Dollar General: We’re looking at Warrensville

WARRENSVILLE-Coming off a record 2015, Dollar General said last week it’s considering opening up an additional 900 discount stores, and that list could include at least one more Ashe County location.

A Dollar General Communications Coordinator, Nolan Miles, said this week the company is doing its due diligence for a possible new store on NC-194 in Warrensville. He said the company isn’t committed to the decision, and said no final plans would be laid until at least mid-fall.

He did share some of the demographic statistics that DG takes into account before opening a new location. Stores must be able to offer convenience for customers as many of Dollar General’s shoppers live within a three- to five-mile radius around the store, or less than 10 minutes away.

Any potential new store would also employ 6-10 people, Miles said.

There are only two Dollar General locations in Ashe County – one on Beaver Creek School Road in West Jefferson and another on US-221 in Jefferson – with another just across the Ashe and Watauga County line in Deep Gap.

America has been kind to discount shopping centers in recent years, including Dollar General. The company’s corporate headquarters, located in Goodlettsville, TN, reported record fourth quarter and full year 2015 financial results on March 10.

Dollar General said its full year net sales were up on the year by nearly 8 percent, while full year same-store sales increased by nearly 3 percent.

“2015 was another great year for Dollar General as we achieved strong financial results with a focus on profitable sales growth,” Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO said in a quarterly earnings report released March 10. “For the 26th consecutive year, we delivered positive same-store sales growth.”

The company said the departments with the largest increases in net sales were candy and snacks, perishables, tobacco and food.

Dollar General said it plans to open approximately 900 new stores and relocate or remodel 875 stores in fiscal 2016. Capital expenditures for fiscal 2016 are expected to be in the range of $550 million to $600 million.

With nearly 12,500 stores in 43 states, Dollar General is already among the largest discount chains in the United States.
