WEST JEFFERSON-Ashe County Schools announced its new interim superintendent Monday night.

Longtime Associate Superintendent of Ashe County Schools Phyllis Yates was the Ashe County Board of Education’s unanimous choice to take over while the board searches for its replacement for the outgoing Todd Holden.

Holden, who has served as Ashe County’s superintendent of schools since 2013, announced last month he was taking over the same position in Madison County.

Yates has been with the district for 42 years and becomes Ashe County’s first female superintendent of schools. She will take over the reigns from Holden beginning July 1.

Ashe County Board of Education Chairman Charlie King said, “Phyllis has a lot of experience with the school system. She knows every aspect. We do not want to coast, we want our school system to move forward and flourish. The logical choice for consistency was Mrs. Yates.”
