WEST JEFFERSON-Town aldermen heard an earful about an eyesore during Monday’s monthly board meeting.
Once again, long-time resident Mike Sawyer brought attention to a “neighborhood blight and various properties that were allowed to decay” during the public comment session of the meeting.
The property in question is located on the short end of Graybeal Avenue, he said.
“It’s disgusting,” Sawyer told the board. “It’s been disgusting for two or three years. Garbage has been allowed to pile up on the front porch. It’s just sat there looking ugly. I suspect it is owned by one our local friendly slumlords.”
Sawyer said he believes the house is vacant now, but it is ultimately the county’s responsibility to condemn the property.
Sawyer discovered this while investigating a two-story shed in his neighborhood that he suspected was built without a permit. That edifice has since fallen down, he said.
Sawyer was hopeful the town could use its power of persuasion to convince the county to condemn the building on Graybeal Avenue.
“I’m no civil engineer, but the only thing that can be done with it is to bulldoze it,” he said.
Aldermen did not further discuss the issue.
