WEST JEFFERSON-Despite efforts made by merchants and town officials to promote West Jefferson as a top tourism destination, at least one online publication is only now starting to recognize the town’s street credentials as a pretty cool place to visit.
During Monday’s West Jefferson Board of Aldermen meeting, Town Manager Brantley Price informed town aldermen that West Jefferson had recently been named one of the “Top 10 ‘Coolest Small Towns in North Carolina You’ve Probably Never Heard Of,” by onlyinyourstate.com.

West Jefferson came in at No. 9 on the list – just ahead of Black Mountain, which has seen its name in bold on so many similar online listings for quaint mountain towns that often fall by the wayside when compared to their metropolitain neighbors.
“Located wayyyy up north in the mountains of North Carolina, West Jefferson has a gorgeous little main street with 360 mountain views all around. It’s a cool little place to stop in between hiking or a weekend trip in the mountains,” a brief overview of the town stated.
Finishing ahead of West Jefferson was Southern Pines at No. 8 and Franklin at No. 7. Hillsborough earned the article’s top spot.
