ASHE COUNTY — The following accidents between June 18 and July 2 were reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol and are considered public record.

June 19

11:17 a.m.

West Jefferson

An animal collision happened on Highway 221 about six miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, David Lynn Henson of Lenoir was traveling south when his vehicle struck a deer.

Henson was uninjured.

The 2016 Freightliner truck had about $1,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

June 20

7:58 a.m.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 less than a mile from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Larry Dean Rhodes of West Jefferson was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the road, crossed the center line and struck a vehicle driven by William Russell Jessup of Lansing. Jessup’s vehicle overturned before coming to a stop.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Rhodes’ 1987 Mercedes had about $4,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Jessup’s 2012 Honda had about $6,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Rhodes was cited for failure to maintain lane control.

June 22

7:31 a.m.

Jefferson

An animal collision happened on Highway 16 about five miles from Jefferson. According to the narrative, Victoria Sage Young of Grassy Creek was traveling south when her vehicle struck a deer in the road.

Young was uninjured.

The 2014 Ford involved had approximately $1,000 in damages but was considered drivable.

June 23

9:14 p.m.

West Jefferson

An animal collision happened on Highway 88 about two miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Ricky Nathaniel Osborne of Creston was traveling west when his vehicle struck a deer.

Osborne was uninjured.

The 1989 Ford involved had an estimated $1,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

10:42 p.m.

Crumpler

A single-vehicle accident happened on Highway 16 near Shatley Springs Road in Crumpler. According to the narrative, Lester Dale Taylor of Jefferson was traveling north when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and down an embankment before overturning.

Taylor was uninjured.

The 1999 BMW involved had approximately $4,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Taylor was cited for failure to maintain lane of travel.

June 24

5:25 p.m.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 163 near Idlewild Road, about seven miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Natalie Foster Britt of Sparta was passing a vehicle in a marked passing zone. Nikki Ella Gilley of Warrensville was attempting a left turn onto Heritage River Drive. Gilley did not see Britt’s vehicle and turned into the side of the vehicle. Britt’s vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and struck an embankment.

Both drivers, a passenger, Patrick Britt of Sparta, and one child passenger were uninjured.

Gilley’s 2008 Toyota had about $4,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Britt’s 2010 Dodge had about $6,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Gilley was cited for a yield violation.

June 25

4:44 p.m.

Glendale Springs

A two-vehicle accident happened at the intersection of Old Wilkesboro Road and Highway 16. According to the narrative, Junior Dean Barker of Jefferson was attempting to turn left onto Old Wilkesboro Road. A vehicle driven by Brandon Derek Ray of Raleigh was traveling west on Old Wilkesboro Road towards the intersection with Highway 16. Barker cut his turn short and collided with the front of Ray’s vehicle.

Both drivers, one child passenger and two other passengers, Bridget Ray of Raleigh and Juanita Ray of Jefferson, were uninjured.

Barker’s 2003 GMC had about $1,800 in damages but was considered drivable.

Ray’s 2014 Ford had about $2,900 in damages but was considered drivable.

Barker was cited for a safe movement violation.

June 26

7:38 p.m.

Lansing

A single-vehicle accident happened on Big Horse Creek Road about seven miles from Lansing. According to the narrative, an unknown driver was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the road to the left and struck a tree. The driver fled the scene following the accident.

The vehicle, a 1994 Dodge owned by Adam Nicholas Campbell of Warrensville, had about $3,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

June 27

1:59 p.m.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 about six miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Robert G. McClung of Rock Hill, South Carolina was traveling north and was stopped for traffic. A vehicle driven by Walter Leonard Petersen III of West Jefferson could not slow down in time and struck McClung’s vehicle in the rear.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Petersen’s 2013 Ford had about $4,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

McClung’s 2015 Chevrolet had about $2,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Petersen was cited for failure to reduce speed.

5 p.m.

Crumpler

A single-vehicle accident happened on J.E. Gentry Road in Crumpler about six miles from Jefferson. According to the narrative, William Anthony Eller of Jefferson was traveling east when the vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck a fence.

Eller was uninjured.

The 2005 Dodge involved had approximately $3,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

The fence belonging to Thomas Gordon Reeves of Crumpler had about $800 in damages.

Eller was cited for exceeding safe speed.

8:46 p.m.

West Jefferson

A single-vehicle accident happened on Beaver Creek School Road about three miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Michael Timothy Howell of West Jefferson was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the road to the right. The vehicle came back on to the road, crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left, striking a tree.

Howell and one passenger, Justin Wayne Testerman of Fleetwood, were transported to Watauga Medical Center.

The 2004 Cadillac involved had about $8,000 in damages and was not considered drivable.

Howell was cited for driving left of center and exceeding safe speeds.

June 28

3:20 p.m.

Grassy Creek

A single-vehicle accident happened on Old Highway 16 in Grassy Creek. According to the narrative, Bridget Graham Winn of Grassy Creek was traveling north when the vehicle ran off the road to the right, striking a ditch and overturning. Winn stated that a FedEx truck was on her side of the road.

Winn refused medical transport.

The 2014 Honda involved had an estimated $4,500 in damages and was not considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

June 29

10:21 p.m.

Glendale Springs

A parking lot collision happened at the New River Inn in Glendale Springs. According to the narrative, David Ralph Denny of West Jefferson was attempting to back north in the parking lot when he failed to see a parked car and collided with the vehicle.

Denny was uninjured.

Denny’s 2004 Mercedes had about $100 in damages but was considered drivable.

The parked car, a 2016 Chevrolet owned by Michael L. Walker of Arlington Heights, Illinois, had about $2,000 in damages but was considered drivable.

Denny was cited for an unsafe movement.

June 30

9:41 p.m.

Jefferson

An animal collision happened on Highway 16 about two miles from Jefferson. According to the narrative, Deborah Jean Spencer of West Jefferson was traveling south when the vehicle struck a deer.

Spencer and two passengers, Dare Lynn Isenhour of West Jefferson and Ethan Jacob Hauple of West Jefferson, were uninjured.

The 2006 Hyundai involved had approximately $1,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

July 2

2:54 a.m.

West Jefferson

A single vehicle accident happened on Idlewild Road about 10 miles from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Kathryn Ruth Greene of West Jefferson was traveling east when the driver stated that she swerved to miss a deer, causing the vehicle to run of the left side of the road. The vehicle then struck a fence, crossed Phillips Gap Road and struck a building.

Greene refused medical transport.

The 2004 Chevrolet involved had an estimated $6,000 in damages but was considered drivable.

The fence belonging to Wilson Eric Bare of West Jefferson had about $1,500 in damages. The building belonging to Jerry Dean Hartzog of West Jefferson had about $10,000 in damages.

Greene was cited for driving left of center.

8:31 a.m.

West Jefferson

A two-vehicle accident happened on Jonas Ridge Drive a little over one mile from West Jefferson. According to the narrative, Felicia Ann Miller of West Jefferson was attempting to back out of a private driveway when her vehicle collided with a vehicle driven by Edith Honeycut Harless of West Jefferson.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Miller’s 1999 Volvo had about $100 in damages but was considered drivable.

Harless’ 1998 Lincoln had about $100 in damages but was considered drivable.

Miller was cited for improper backing.

10:57 a.m.

Glendale Springs

A motorcycle accident happened on Highway 16 near Glendale Springs. According to the narrative, Dylan Breece Howell of Jefferson was traveling north. The motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and overturned. Howell was thrown from the motorcycle.

Howell was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital.

The 2015 Harley Davidson involved had approximately $3,000 in damages but was considered drivable.

Howell was cited for a lane control violation and driving without a motorcycle license.

1:15 p.m.

Fleetwood

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 near Fleetwood. According to the narrative, Mary Campbell Worley of West Jefferson was pulling out of a driveway onto Highway 221. Worley pulled onto the road directly in front of the path of a vehicle driven by April Alane Pennington of Vilas. Pennington swerved to avoid a collision, causing the vehicle to travel off the right side of the road, down a small embankment. The vehicle was driven out of the field to a nearby parking lot before the arrival of law enforcement.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Pennington’s 2013 Subaru had an estimated $100 in damages but was considered drivable.

No citations were issued.

7:56 p.m.

Fleetwood

A two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 221 near Fleetwood. According to the narrative, Lillian Nave Goudas of Lenoir was stopped for traffic traveling south. A vehicle driven by Ruby Hicks Billings of Crumpler could not slow down in time and struck the rear of Goudas’ vehicle.

Both drivers and three child passengers were uninjured. Another passenger, Lorene H. McGuire of Crumpler, was transported to Watauga Medical Center.

Billings’ 2005 Hyundai had about $1,500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Goudas’ 2003 Honda had about $500 in damages but was considered drivable.

Billings was cited for failure to reduce speed.
