WEST JEFFERSON —Mountain Town Dental was recently awarded the 2015 Employer Support Freedom Award in recognition of their exemplary support of National Guard and Reserve member employees.
Dr. Alvin Jenkins of Mountain Town Dental said that even though he never served in the military himself, he grew up with a lot of respect and appreciation of the military and what they do.
Jenkins’ grandfather was a sergeant in WWI and Jenkins lived on an Air Force base when he was younger since his father worked for the Civil Service.
“I do value our armed forces,” Jenkins said. “I think we should do whatever we can to support the men and women who wear a uniform to defend our freedom.”
Mountain Town Dental was nominated for the award for supporting Business Manager Jason Stopper who is in the reserves.
Dr. Jenkins also occasionally works after hours to provide dental services for those in the military who are in need of dental work and are about to be shipped out.
“I think we are all blessed to live in the United States of America and we need to support our military,” Jenkins said.
The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and is awarded by the U.S. Government to employers who support their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
Since 1996, ESGR has awarded 205 employers with the Freedom Award. 15 awards are now presented each year to employers of three categories including large business, small business and the public sector.
Jenkins earned his degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and has worked with Mountain Town Dental since 1976.
Jenkins works alongside his daughter, Dr. Emily Stopper.
