WEST JEFFERSON – Ashe County High School graduate Connor Bowers, son of Kevin and Donna Bowers of Jefferson, has been named the 2015 recipient of the LifeStore Bank and Insurance Merit Scholarship.
LifeStore awards this $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior based on a combination of academic achievement, financial need and extracurricular activities.
Connor’s academic accomplishments include graduating in the top ten percent of his class, Junior Marshall, Beta Club member and Rho Kappa Honor Society member. He also has been recognized for a number of athletic accomplishments including Varsity Football All Conference Player of the Year and Varsity Basketball All Conference. He also set a state high school record for passing yards during his 12th grade year. He completed the Dick Miller Leadership program and ranks this leadership course as one of his favorite experiences outside the classroom. Connor has also been involved in the community, volunteering for the Sharing Center and being an active member at Grace Community Church. Connor will attend Appalachian State University where he plans to study Finance and Banking and Risk Management and Insurance and hopes to return and work in Ashe County following his time in college.

In addition to the Merit Scholarships, LifeStore also awards LifeStore Family Scholarships to employees’ children who graduate high school with plans to continue their education. This year LifeStore awarded two employee scholarships to Corey Ward and Lisa Potter.
Corey is the son of Lisa Ward who works in loan operations for LifeStore Bank in the West Jefferson Support Center. Corey graduated from Ashe County High School and has been very active in band; participating in marching, steel and symphonic bands. Corey plans to attend Wilkes Community College and is considering studying language arts.
Lisa is the daughter of Chris and Andrea Potter, Assistant Systems Manager for LifeStore Insurance in the Boone location. Lisa graduated from Johnson County High School where she was in the top ten percent of her class and was one of the Valedictorians. In her spare time, she worked at a local restaurant. She has a passion for reading and plans to pursue a degree in language arts. She hopes to teach English when she finishes college at East Tennessee University.
