JEFFERSON-Following a decision by the West Jefferson Board of Adjustments to deny a conditional use permit for a tattoo shop, Mason Harris has decided to take his business elsewhere.
Harris, the owner of the Joy of Vaping, told the Jefferson Post Friday afternoon he is relocating his vape shop to Jefferson with plans of adding a tattoo shop to his enterprise in November.
His new shop will be located near Tractor Supply and two doors down from When Pigs Fly barbecue.
Harris wasted little time in making a decision about the future of his joint enterprise after the board of adjustments denied his request to open up a tattoo and piercing business in town limits earlier this week.
“The decision was made today,” said manager Steven Absher. “The idea was actually brought up last week with the thought of being railroaded by the town.”
Because zoning prevents tattoo shops in town limits, Harris was attempting to go through the arduous process of earning a CUP. He had already cleared the hurdles in place in getting the OK from the town’s planning board and aldermen. The board of adjustment’s was the final stage in his challenge of opening the town’s first tattoo shop.
Although the planning board and board of adjustments consist of the same members, he could not secure enough votes from the latter despite advancing past the planning board’s scrutiny.
“Social media has proven that quite a few people want a shop as well,” said Absher on the decision to move.
Absher said that Harris will not have to go through any special permitting process in their new home.
“Jefferson has welcomed us with open arms,” said Absher. “This is a positive thing for the community.”
