JOHNSON CITY, TN-A Fleetwood man who survived a single vehicle car crash that claimed the life of another man in early October died this week.
That’s according to the creator of a fundraiser to help Erick Barcenas, 18, and his family, and statements made by Ashe County Schools officials at a varsity soccer game on Oct. 26.
“We mourn the tragic loss of our dear friend, Erick, shortly after midnight,” Kitty Honeycutt wrote on her GoFundMe. “He was as fine a young man as you could meet. His family asks that we say thank you for all the support. They ask that you keep praying for Erick and God bless you all. We will post details of the service once they are finalized. This page will remain open to continue support of Erick’s family.”
Honeycutt launched the GoFundMe page on Oct. 13. To date, it’s raised more than $2,800 to help the Barcenas family defray the costs of his care, and give readers an update on Barcenas’ status.
Barcenas and Luis Ramos, 19, also of Fleetwood, were traveling north in a 1999 Subaru Impreza on NC-194 on Oct. 9, just north of the intersection of Railroad Grade Road when the accident occurred, according to North Carolina State Trooper Kevin Aldridge.
Barcenas was driving while Ramos was in the front passenger seat, according to Aldridge.
The pair traveled around a left hand curve, went off the road to the right and struck a tree, Aldridge said.
“Both men were restrained but it was a side impact with the tree and something a seat belt isn’t going to offer as much help with,” Aldridge said.
A passing motorist saw the wreck and alerted authorities, Aldridge said. Ramos was pronounced dead at the scene while Barcenas was rushed by helicopter to Johnson City.
