WEST JEFFERSON — Jefferson Avenue in West Jefferson was recognized as a “Great Main Street” in the 2015 Great Places in North Carolina awards program sponsored by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC).
The program is designed to celebrate great places in North Carolina and recognize the hard work and partnerships that created them.
“All of these ‘Great Main Streets’ represent excellent examples of community-based planning at its best,” said John Morck, President of APA-NC. “Through this program, we celebrate great places in our state and the local partnerships that have worked collaboratively to make these places great.”
Representatives of the APA-NC presented the Town of West Jefferson with an award during a special presentation on Friday, July 3 during the annual Christmas in July Festival.
West Jefferson was one of seven communities in North Carolina to be recognized.
Sunset Avenue in Asheboro, Main Street in Belmont and Middle Street in New Bern were recognized in the Professional’s Category along with Jefferson Avenue in West Jefferson.
The Professional’s Category included an extensive nomination and judging process.
Goldsboro’s Center Street was also recognized as a ‘Great Main Street In-the-Making.’
Roanoke Rapids’ Roanoke Canal Trail was selected as the People’s Choice: Great Greenway and Kinston’s 200 North Queen Street was selected as the People’s Choice: Great Historic Rehabilitation. Nearly 40,000 North Carolinians voted on these two categories in an online voting poll.
West Jefferson and the other selected towns will be featured on GreatPlacesNC.org and the APA-NC website. They will also be recognized at the upcoming APA-NC annual conference in October.
