WEST JEFFERSON-Two people were sent to Ashe Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon following a single vehicle crash on NC-163.

That news comes from the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

North Carolina State Trooper J Williams said speed was a factor in an accident that sent a car careening down an embankment and into a creek near the intersection of NC-163 and Idlewild Road shortly after 5 p.m. March 18.

The car, driven by Kayla Spears, 23, of West Jefferson, came to rest on its top.

Nearly invisible from the roadway, first responders from the Glendale Springs Volunteer Fire Department on the scene said the incident was reported to authorities by someone living nearby who heard the crash unfold.

The car clipped at least one tree as it left the roadway and went airborne before crashing into the creek.

Williams said Spears and a passenger were sent for treatment to AMH.

“(The passenger) sustained relatively minor injuries, as did Ms. Spears,” Williams said.
