WEST JEFFERSON-Local law enforcement will serve up its second helping of Coffee with a Cop April 28 on the Backstreet in West Jefferson.

The informal sip and speak will run from 9-10:30 a.m. at the West Jefferson Coffee House.

It’s the second such event hosted by the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office, and is designed to allow local citizes to air their concerns, share their stories and ask questions of members of the ACSO, and the West Jefferson and Jefferson Police Departments.

At the first monthly Coffee With a Cop on March 28 at Bohemia, Ashe County Sheriff Terry Buchanan said he felt the event was an important step in building trust with his new constituency. In a controversial 3-2 decision in January, Buchanan was installed in the office of sheriff by the Ashe County Board of Commissioners following the retirement of long time Ashe County Sheriff James Williams.

The move drew fire from some because it deviated from the succession plan laid out by Williams, which would have seen commissioners confirm former ACSO Chief Deputy Bucky Absher as Williams’ replacement. Since the move, Buchanan has taken fire from all corners of social media.

Buchanan has said in previous interviews he’s committed to overhauling the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office and making the office’s actions more transparent. That was the idea behind “Coffee with a Cop,” he said.
