Participants in the 13th Annual Watauga-Ashe-Wilkes Scholarship Endowment Golf Tournament, held Sept. 12, at Jefferson Landing, helped to raise over $100,000 for a scholarship endowment that benefits students in Watauga, Ashe, and Wilkes counties. 132 players from across the country participated in the event.


Taking first place in the tournament was Eddie Vannoy, Mark Billings, Shane Simmons and Chad Frye. The second place team included Bruce Ballard Sr., Bruce Ballard Jr., Clyde Atwood, and Chris Claycomb. The third place team included Ronnie Eller, David Parks, Tommy Elrod, and Brandon Vannoy.


The first place gross score winners were Shane Vannoy, Jimmy Hendrick, Chris Miller, and Mike Kesterson.


The Watauga-Ashe-Wilkes Scholarship Endowment was established in 2001 with the purpose of making a difference in someone’s life by giving them an educational opportunity they might not have without the support of a scholarship. The first recipients were awarded scholarships in 2002. In addition to the annual golf tournament, the board solicits corporate and individual gifts to build scholarship funds. The Watauga-Ashe-Wilkes Scholarship Endowment is governed by the North Carolina Community Fund and is a 501c3 organization. Board members include Phil Stevens, president; Charles Hartzog, vice-president; Kim Forester, secretary; Kim Barnes, treasurer; Daphne Petrey, publicity; Michael Lyall, Watauga; Bradley McNeil, Ashe; Danny Holman, Wilkes; and Allison Phillips, Wilkes.


“I would like to thank everyone who contributed and participated in this year’s tournament,” said tournament co-chair Phil Stevens, “Through everyone’s support we are reaching our goal of helping students in three counties realize a brighter future through the promise of an education.”


The 2014 WAW Golf tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 at Jefferson Landing.


The board would like to thank those who gave generously to sponsor this year’s tournament. The 2013 recipients of the Watauga-Ashe-Wilkes Scholarship are: Jake Page (Watauga County), Kelsey Eggers and Hayley Ragland (Ashe County), and Cassandra Carter and Avery Wallis (Wilkes County). All six young ladies have expressed sincere gratitude for the receipt of this scholarship and plan to do well academically in order to receive it for all four years for a total of $8,000.
