The annual Ashe County Canned Food drive started Friday, Oct. 11, in various locations throughout the county.

The drive, sponsored by the Ashe County Volunteer Initiative, provides nonperishable foods to the local food banks and runs through Dec. 13. All of the food will be given to the food banks to help give families the food needed for the holiday season.

“Typically, we get around 2,000 items each year,” said Glenda Luther, an organizer for the drive. “We also receive a lot of monetary donations.”

Luther said once the drive is complete, volunteers sort through the various food items and sends everything to the different charities the initiative is helping.

“The items are separated in equal amounts in the food pantry,” she said.

People who want to donate will be able to drop off canned foods at Ingles, Lowes Foods, Food Lion, Ashe Memorial Hospital, Ashe Services for Aging, Wilkes Community College, Dollar General and Ashe Optometric Eye Care. Each building will have boxes for the drive.

Luther said donations are mostly in the form of canned vegetables, soups and cereals. A wide variety of foods are given through the two-month long drive.

Nonperishable food can also be donated, and not all food has to be canned.

All of the donations will be distributed to: The Sharing Center, Ashe Really Cares, A Safe Home for Everyone (A.S.H.E.) and Ashe Outreach Ministries. That food will then be distributed to those in need in the county.

Luther said the community continues to strongly support this annual event.
