The Ashe County Board of Commissioners in a 5-0 vote approved an audit contract for Ashe County’s finances for fiscal year 2013-14.

The audit will be conducted by Priscilla Norris, CPA, based in Jefferson and will look at the county’s finances from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

“There aren’t a lot of changes in the contract,” Norris said.

According to the contract, the county will be paying Norris $30,000 for the audit and $8,500 for the preparation of the financial statements.

According to a letter from Norris to the Board of Commissioners, “the object of our audit is the expression of an opinion as to whether your financial statements are fairly presented.”

“The only change is I have increased the fee by $500 in anticipation that we will have a little bit more work at DSS (Department of Social Services) with the N.C. FAST system,” Norris said. “Otherwise, there are not a lot of changes this time.”

In addition, Norris said the audit will be done in accordance with government auditing standards. Alongside the budget, the audit will also cover budgetary comparison schedules, information on the county’s infrastructure and a schedule of state and federal awards.

County Manager Sam Yearick said the audit should be in no later than October 31, meaning the audit presentation would take place in a scheduled November meeting of the Commissioners.

In other action taken by the board:

• Approved establishing fire service districts for: Creston, Glendale Springs, Laurel Springs, Todd and Warrensville volunteer fire departments. In addition, the Board approved expanding the district for the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department.

• In attendance were: Larry Rhodes, William Sands, Gary Roark, Gerald Price and Judy Porter Poe. The next meeting of the Ashe County Board of Commissioners is set for 1 p.m. on Monday, June 16.
