A woman lost control of her vehicle and tumbled over an embankment at the intersection of U.S. 221, N.C. 194 and N.C. 163, known locally as “malfunction junction,” early Friday evening.
The woman, as yet unidentified, was briefly pinned in the Nissan Altima she was driving before being removed by emergency services personnel from the West Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department and Blue Ridge Medical Transport.
She was the vehicle’s only occupant.
According to witnesses on the scene, the woman was travelling south on U.S. 221 through the intersection when she suddenly veered left and exited the roadway at the corner of N.C. 163 and U.S. 221. The car came to rest on its roof.
After being removed by EMS personnel from the vehicle, she was taken to Ashe Memorial Hospital by Blue Ridge Medical Transport.
The West Jefferson Police Department will conduct an investigation of the accident.
