North Carolina’s unemployment rate remained steady at 6.4 percent for the month of June 2014, according to a release sent out Friday, July 18 by the N.C. Department of Commerce.


“North Carolina’s June 2014 unemployment rate was 1.9 percentage points lower than a year ago,” according to the release sent out by the N.C. DOC’s Labor and Economic Analysis Division. “The number of people employed decreased 8,577over the month to 4,389,167 and increased 77,054 over the year.”


According to the release, the number of people unemployed decreased by 2,142 people between May and June to 299,313. The number declined 89,007 over the course of the year.


North Carolina’s unemployment rate is higher than the national unemployment rate of 6.1 percent. When the rates are not seasonably adjusted, North Carolina has an unemployment rate of 6.5 percent, compared to the national rate of 6.3 percent.


Professional and business services had the largest gain in jobs between May and June with 3,700 jobs, followed by financial activities (3,400) and trade, transportation and utilities (1,000). The largest decrease in jobs was in government jobs, followed by information and leisure and hospitality services.


According to the data, government is the only industry to report a loss of jobs in North Carolina between June 2013 and 2014.


“Average weekly hours for manufacturing production workers in June increased 42 minutes from May’s revised rate of 43.1,” according to the release. “Average hourly earnings fell by $0.16 to $16.65, as average weekly earnings grew by $4.76 to $729.27.”


The number of regular initial claims for unemployment insurance was 24,209 in June 2014, increasing 903 from May. According to the N.C. DOC, $36,846,105 in regular unemployment insurance benefits was paid to 40,347 people statewide, a decrease of 2,035 since May.


The next unemployment update will be provided by the N.C. DOC on Wednesday, July 30, when the state will release county-by-county statistics for unemployment in June 2014.
