Three full days of soccer workouts and skill building wrapped up on July 12 with more than 60 campers coming out to the annual soccer camp hosted by junior varsity soccer coach Alex Wray.

“Camp was intense this year. I had kids come to me and tell me I had the best soccer camp anywhere on the mountain,” said Coach Wray.

Campers went through different stations for set amounts of time to work on different skills at each stop. Players would learn the proper fundamentals of soccer, as well as the basics of passing and shooting, and even trick shots that kids see the pros doing.

This year, Kiki Wallace of the High Country Soccer Association was also in attendance to help out with the camp.

“Kiki came in and did his thing. He didn’t have to do anything with my camp at all but he did and it makes me feel good that somebody has the same passion for the game of soccer that I have,” said Coach Wray.

Wray estimated that between 30 and 40 soccer players from Ashe County play each year with the HCSA Avalanche in Boone where Wallace is the program director.

Coach Wray also had help from several current and former Ashe County High School players, including all-time leading scorer Aspen Domske, Miguel Ramos and Frank Ledezma. He was pleased to see players that have been to his camp and played for him come back and share what they have learned with current younger players.

The main goal for Coach Wray next summer is to keep improving the camps that he hosts each year, both the wrestling and MMA camp as well as the soccer camp.

“I’m really passionate about what I do and I want to get better every year,” said Coach Wray. “This camp made me hungry to keep doing what I do. I love doing these camps.”

Wray wanted to thank God and his wife and family for all the support for the camp, and thank the numerous sponsors that made this camp successful.

Sponsors included Lifestore, Ashe Custom Framing and Gallery, Magic Video, Antiques on Main, Dr. Hank Clay Jr., and Summit Support Services.
