Coming off of the best season in school history, the Husky soccer team will face a bit of adversity right off the bat, and will need players to step up to replace 11 seniors from last year’s squad.

“Our goals are always to win the conference championship and make a significant run in the state playoffs,” said Head Coach Wes Rousseau. “Our road to the championship this year is a bit more difficult, as we have to overcome the loss of a solid 11-member senior class an also MVAC Player of the Year Miguel Ramos, who is likely out for the season with a shoulder injury that required surgery.”

Ashe will turn to three returning all-conference players Frank Ledezma, Cesar Ruiz and Alexis Ramos to lead the team.

“Frank and Cesar are very dangerous strikers and both scored 30-plus goals last season, and we expect them to lead a potent offensive attack,” said Rousseau. “Alexis, our all-conference and all-region senior sweeper, will be the anchor of our rebuilt defense.”

Trent Pruitt and Jamie Weaver will play center-mid and have improved a great deal from last year and will be there to direct the offense.

On the wings, sophomores Victor Melo and Eric Barcenas will make the move up from JV this season and replace seniors Lucas Zeller and Sam Bowers who spent a lot of time playing on the outside.

The back line will be bolstered by seniors Brayam Reyes, Alex Church and Matthew Ball and juniors Kelly Brooks and Justin Roland. Sophomore Kendall Wagner will also see time on the back line.

The goalie position is very important to any successful team, and for Ashe, they are having to replace Braxton Treadway.

“Jamison Cline has done a very impressive job up to this point in practice of filling the large shoes of our three-year keeper Braxton Treadway. He (Cline) looks up to the task,” said Rousseau.

Wilkes Central looks to be the strongest contender next to Ashe in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference since Forbush is no longer a member. Elkin also has one of the top players in the league in Daniel Cortez, while West Wilkes and Starmount should also field solid teams this season.

“We’ve experienced a great deal of success in the last two years, and we look for that trend to continue in 2013,” said Coach Rousseau.
