Ashe faced a tough non-conference foe on Thursday with 4A tennis power Watauga as the opponent.

The Lady Pioneers won all nine matches to send Ashe to its second loss of the season.

“This non-conference match against a 4A team provided great experience for our young team,” said Head Coach Larry Dix. “They had an opportunity to play against a state championship contender and probably one of the best teams they will face this year.”

Fourth seeded Kasey Curcio was out for this match with a foot injury, moving senior Erin Griffin into her spot as one of the top six seeds.

Top seeded Meredith Smith beat Ashe’s top seed Hallie Brown in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Megan Smith won the matchup of second seeded players with a 6-1, 6-0 score over Maggie Witherspoon.

Both third and fourth seeded matches ended in identical 6-0, 6-1 scores. Nicole Fox defeated Grace Miller and Kelsi Kaney beat Mary Austin Tugman.

Liz Clark and Annika Davidson beat Ella Copeland and Erin Griffin in straight sets to wrap up singles play.

Watauga swept all three doubles matches as well with 8-0 scores.

“I am very proud of how our team handled themselves against a team that overpowered them on the court,” said Coach Dix. “They showed great sportsmanship, determination and class.

Overall, Coach Dix felt that each player will take their experience from playing such strong competition and continue to work hard and improve their skills.

The Lady Huskies will travel to West Wilkes on Tuesday for the second Mountain Valley Conference match of the season.
