Another strong defensive effort finally had some extra offense to go with it to give the Huskies their first win of the season, 23-12 over R.J. Reynolds.
Ashe got interceptions from Shawn Baker, Matthew Hamilton and Jacob Blevins, as well as fumble recoveries from Alex Laws and Mitchell Brown.
Blevins led all players with seven tackles. Kenny Reed had six tackles and Dustin Guy recorded five takedowns.
Junior quarterback Connor Bowers completed 10 of 18 passes for 105 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Bowers also added a touchdown rushing the ball.
Probably the best news any Ashe County fan would want to hear was the return of leading rusher Johnathan Cox. The senior had 13 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown. This was his first regular season game after suffering a knee injury in the opening scrimmage of the year.
Hunter Barnes was Ashe’s leading rusher with 14 carries for 64 yards. Hamilton pitched in 25 yards on 11 rushes.
Through the air, Maison McNeill grabbed four passes for 41 yards. Blevins had one catch for 31 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Worley had four catches for 23 yards and Cox added one catch for 10 yards.
Overall, Ashe out-gained Reynolds on the ground, 139 yards to 124 yards.
Reynolds had more total yards than the Huskies, but the turnovers that the Ashe defense came up with turned out to be the game changer.
The Huskies are now 1-2 overall and will be playing their final non-conference game next week at home against Hibriten.
