Four seniors were recognized in their final home match of a regular season that has been a great year from start to finish. Ella Copeland, Kasey Curcio, Erin Griffin and Mary Austin Tugman have all played a big role in this year’s team success.
With Thursday’s 8-1 win over Wilkes Central, Ashe finished a 12-4 season overall and a 12-2 mark in conference play.
“This was a great win in the last match of the regular season, and really gives us good momentum going into the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament at Elkin” said Head Coach Larry Dix.
Top seed Hallie Brown played very well in her return to singles action after missing the Starmount match due to illness. Brown beat Mary Hollis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Maggie Witherspoon earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory against McKenzie Ingle and third seed Grace Miller won easily over Madison Wilcox, 6-0, 6-2.
Curcio and Copeland won their singles matches over Marissa Ingle and Stephanie Shinaman.
Tugman had a tough match and lost to Wilkes Central’s Bri Roten.
In doubles play, Brown and Witherspoon were 8-5 winners over Hollis and Roten. Miller and Tugman defeated McKenzie and Marissa Ingle, 8-2, and the tandem of Curcio and Copeland beat Wilcox and Rebecca Penday, 8-0.
The two teams played one exhibition match. Griffin and Rae Zeller won a doubles match by a 6-2 score.
“I am very proud of all these players for their extra effort, positive attitude and sportsmanship,” Coach Dix said.
The MVAC Tournament will be Tuesday and Wednesday in Elkin.
