All across different sports at different levels of competition, athletes can be seen wearing pink shoes, jerseys, shirts, gloves and other numerous pieces of clothing to bring awareness to breast cancer during this month.

On Monday, the Ashe County varsity soccer team will do their part in raising money and awareness for the tragic and deadly disease by wearing pink jerseys against rival Wilkes Central.

Ashe will host the Eagles with the junior varsity game starting at 5:15 p.m. and the varsity game following at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and wear pink in support of the cause.

“Our team has been directly affected by breast cancer with two players losing their mothers to the disease, so we felt it was important to bring awareness to it on the field,” said Head Coach Wes Rousseau.

Donations to the American Cancer Society are greatly appreciated, and will be donated in honor of two soccer moms, Tammy Riddle Roland and Hortencia Rosales, who lost their courageous fight with breast cancer recently.

A special thanks goes out to Joel Yates Jr., D.D.S., Brett Summey, D.D.S. and Ashe County Ford for sponsoring this event.

This past Tuesday, Ashe traveled to Elkin in a crucial Mountain Valley Conference matchup between the first place and third place teams.

Ashe came away with a big 3-1 victory. Frank Ledezma, Cesar Ruiz and Victor Melo scored Ashe’s goals.

The Huskies are now 11-6 overall and 8-1 in conference. Ashe is also tied with Wilkes Central for first place, making Monday’s “Pink Game” even more important.
