Tommy Spagnolo, former Ashe County Husky star and Radford University transfer, impressed App State head coach Jason Capel enough to earn a starting spot as the Mountaineer basketball season gets underway.
Spagnolo and the Mountaineers began play last Friday at N.C. State. The Wolfpack won, but Spagnolo had a solid opener with eight points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 38 minutes on the court.
Tevin Baskin led the Mountaineers in scoring with 24 points.
On Tuesday, ASU suffered a tough home loss to Campbell. After trailing by as many as 16 points, the Mountaineers battled back down the stretch to get to within four points, but missed free throws doomed ASU from the get-go. ASU was just 9-22 shooting from the charity stripe (41-percent).
Spagnolo finished that game with six points, four rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes of court time.
The Mountaineers will get a tough test on Saturday. ASU travels to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Net and on ESPN 3.
Next week, App State returns home to face Lees-McRae on Tuesday before traveling to battle North Carolina Central in Durham.
In total, ASU will play 13 non-conference games before their final season of Southern Conference Basketball begins on Jan. 2.
