Ashe leads conference cup standings

The Huskies hold a slim advantage over Elkin and Wilkes Central in the 2013-2014 Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings.
Ashe has gotten off to a strong start so far this sports season with conference championships in football, soccer, cross country and women’s tennis.
Points are handed out to each team in the conference based on how well they perform in each sport during fall, winter and springs sports seasons. The Huskies currently have 43.5 points.
Elkin is in second place with 38 points. The Elks won the conference championship in men’s cross country and women’s golf.
Wilkes Central holds down the third spot with 35.5 points thanks to a share of the men’s soccer championship and a second place finish in women’s golf.
East Wilkes is in fourth (27) followed by Starmount (26), Alleghany (25), West Wilkes (24) and North Wilkes (22).
In other area conferences, Avery sits fourth in the 1A/2A Western Highlands conference behind Hendersonville, Polk County and Mountain Heritage. Bishop McGuinness owns the top spot in the Northwest 1A with two cross country championships and a women’s tennis title. Mount Airy is second, followed by North Stokes, East Surry, Walkertown, Atkins and Winston-Salem Prep.
Watauga is in the lead in the Northwestern 3A/4A conference after sweeping cross country and winning women’s tennis. Hickory is in second place, eight points behind after runner-up finishes in volleyball and women’s tennis. Freedom holds down third thanks to winning the football conference championship. South Caldwell is fourth, Fred T. Foard sits fifth, Patton is sixth, St. Stephens is seventh and Hibriten is in eighth.
